For those of us interested in cyber security based here in the SW, the SWCSC (a not-for-profit company working with the Police to support businesses getting to grips with cyber security) seeks to initiate a quarterly networking event for cyber security professionals and businesses that want to learn more about the topic.

We want to enable the sharing of best practise, help keep members up to date with the latest threats, and provide a forum for wider cybersec professionals to have an informal touch point with the Police and their SW cyber crime unit. If we all get to know our fellow professionals here in the SW, we can develop helpful networks for those times of crises we all know are just a user click away.

Our regular suggested format (and we can debate this on the night if you want something different) is to obtain one great keynote speaker to kick off each evening, then have an open forum rant – where anyone can stand up for 5-10 mins to raise an issue, something cyber they want to understand, a concern about emerging threats and how to handle them or frankly anything cybersec. Just one rule – NO SALES PITCHES.

We have an awesome speaker to kick off this networking group.

Lt Gen Prof Sir Edmund Burton KBE DL.

Sir Edmund retired from his final appointment as Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff (Systems) in 2000 and undertook a review of GCHQ’s New Accommodation Programme, followed by a review of the UK’s Information Security capability. The latter led to the establishment of the Central Sponsor for Information Assurance (CSIA) in the Cabinet Office. Sir Edmund was Executive Chairman of the Police IT Organisation (PITO) for 3 years and then Chairman of the Information Assurance Advisory Council (IAAC) for 10 years, during which he undertook the review of MOD’s data losses in 2008. He now supports the Trustworthy Software Foundation as Chairman of the Advisory Committee. He is also Chairman of the Professional Advisory Board of the Cyber Body of Knowledge (CyBoK).

Sir Edmund’s Talk will be on:

Cybersecurity Leadership in a Changing and Uncertain World

Schedule:

5.45pm – arrival – grab a drink at the bar

6pm-6.45pm – Sir Edmund Burton

6.45pm – CyberSec Rant, a great way to break the ice and get engagement started.

It would be helpful if anyone interested in talking on a topic can send their question or rant issue to info@southwestcsc.org ahead of time so we can have a few hot topics to debate from the floor, we want this to be member driven and totally open format.

7.30ish – light snacks and networking
